Oogle Maps, 2020

In the short time I spent in Berlin and living in Istanbul for twenty-years,
I soon realised the different urban textures of these two mega cities by using Google Maps. As I started to record my trips, it became vivid that these two cities have juxtaposing city planing. I started to form a thesis when I understood the political and social background of Berlin and Istanbul.
Berlin’s urban reform after the Second World War allowed rigid and formulated lines in the urban planning. While Istanbul is layered in historical structures which form fluid and bent lines. Istanbul’s geographical environment is dominated by the Bosphorus Sea which helps the lines of the city to form in the branching manner. However, in Berlin we see a more circular growth due its land-lock nature.
